Must Have Breastfeeding Products
After talking to over 100 moms, (don’t you just love Facebook Groups?) I’ve put together this massive list of must have breastfeeding products that every mom should have in their arsenal.
- Nippe Cream – The most raved about nipple creams for nursing mamas in need of saving their nipples are Earth Mama Angel Baby Nipple Cream and Motherlove Nipple Cream. A good nipple cream is a must-have when your nipples are tender due to a ver hungry baby!
- Nipple Shield – Many moms have to use a shield, especially if you are having a hard time perfecting baby’s latch. Breastfeeding is no fun at all when your nipples are sore. These Medela Nipple Shields saved me when I was dreading the next nursing session before it had even begun. (To make them stick a little better to your breast, try coating the shield with a little bit of Lanolin first.)
- Washable Breast Pads – Boobies are meant to make milk, and leak they will! Keep a few pairs of these on hand to keep your shirts dry. There’s nothing like having a let down in public! (How embarrassing!) Keep your shirt dry with these washable breast pads.
- Jelly Cold/Heat Packs – I recommend these Breast Therapy Packs to all nursing moms for so many reasons! Moist heat when breastfeeding can help with engorgement, mastitis, clogged ducts, milk blebs, low milk flow, slow let-down, as well as general discomfort and soreness when breastfeeding. A cool compress can help reduce swelling due to engorgement when your milk comes in.
- Efficient Breast Pump – A good pump is a must have for moms who are exclusively pumping, breastfeeding and pumping and definitely those who have to return to work. The top three recommended was the Medela Pump in Style and the Spectra Baby USA Double/Single Breast Pump.
- Kiinde Pump System – I love this system! I personally used this and loved the fact that I didn’t have to wash bottles after work! Anything that saves me time is a win in my book. The Kiinde Starter Kit comes with a set of adapters that attach to most popular breast pumps. With these adapters, you can pump your milk directly into the storage bags, refrigerate or freeze if needed and then feed your baby directly from these bags with the included nipple attachments! (There are three different flows included) My babe had virtually NO gas and I barely had to burp her. The replacement bags are a bit more pricey than other breast milk bags, but I washed and reused them a few times to get my money worth. (Instead of throwing them away, I sometimes used them to transport liquids other than breast milk, too!)
- Hands-Free Pumping Bra – Mamas, we’re always multitasking, aren’t we? Enough said. A hands-free pumping bra like this one will make it possible to do all of the things a mama needs to do.
- Pumping Bag- Some pumps, especially those that are offered through your insurance program will not come with a bag to carry it in. My first pump through insurance came with a nice bag with a cooler compartment, three cooler packs and some extra bottles. My second pump literally came in a tiny little square zip up thing as big as the pump itself. If this thing is going to be your ball-and-chain, you might as well make it as stylish as you can! I LOVE Sarah Wells’ line of breast pump bags. (The blue and white striped one is my favorite!)
- Nipple Everter – This nipple everter, as they call it, is a funny little tool, but comes in handy if you happen to have inverted or smaller nipples. I don’t necessarily have that problem, but I used this tool when I was desperate for my baby to get a better latch.
- Coconut Oil – Coconut oil strikes again! Breastfeeding moms can use Coconut oil to soothe dry and cracked nipples and it can even help repair them. Coconut oil has antiviral and anti-fungal properties, it is a perfect all natural solution to healing damaged nipples.
- Hydrogel Pads – These hydrogel pads are another great product for soothing nipple pain. These little wonderous sticky gel pads keep nipples hydrated and provide instant, cooling relief to sore nipples! They are pretty pricey; I cut them into quarters when I needed them.
- Nursing Camis – When you’re nursing, you are going to want an easy way to whip those milk makers out! Therefore, a few nursing camis are a must! Some of the favorites are these and these.
- Thin Nursing Bras – Unfortunately comfort comes before style when you become a mom. Especially in the early weeks. You’ll love lounging around in simple nursing bras like these that make it convenient to nurse at both day and night.
- Milk-Saver Breast Milk Collector Storage This little tool is a life, I mean MILK saver! Simply slip it in your bra and save every precious drop of that liquid gold! No more soaking your nursing pads, shirt or child. A definite must have for every nursing mama. (Makes a great gift, too!)
- Medela Quick Clean Breast Pump and Accessory Wipes – I used these wipes after every pumping session when I went back to work. Instead of washing the pump parts every time (because who really has time for that?) I would wipe them down and stick them back in my cooler for my next pumping session. They saved me lots of time.
- Freezer Storage Compartment – If you are planning on building any sort of stash for date nights or returning to work, you will definitely need something in your freezer to keep your milk organized. You want to use your oldest milk first so a storage compartment like this one keeps them all in order. Tip: Be sure to freeze the milk bags flat first. That way, you can line them up nicely in the container.
- Nursing Caddy Bag – I encourage every new nursing mom to have a small little basket or caddy like this one, that they can keep with them at all times! In it, you can put necessities like your cell phone, chapstick, lotion, a burp rag, nipple cream, tissue and even a few snacks. Anything you might need while nursing is in hands reach.
- Car Adaptor and Battery Adapter – You never want to be stuck in a situation where you need to pump but don’t have access to an outlet! Or, maybe your power is out. Talk about stressful! Having alternate adapters means you will never be stuck out and about (or in traffic!) unable to pump. This set is for the Medela Pump in Style; if you have a different pump, be sure to get the correct one.
- Hand Pump – A hand pump like this one is great to take with you on the go and requires no battery or electricity. Just energy from you! It’s a good idea to have a hand pump if you want to be able to carry it along in your purse, take it on a short vacation or simply keep as a backup.
- Fenugreek – A natural herbal remedy known to increase milk supply. Beware, you might find yourself smelling like Sunday morning breakfast when you’re taking it! Many moms say they smell like syrup! I like this capsule because it also includes milk thistle, which is also known to help with milk supply.
- Mother’s Milk Tea – With herbs like fennel, anise (which give the tea a sweet, licorice-like taste), coriander and fenugreek, Mother’s Milk tea has been known to help moms boost their milk supply. Perfect for a cozy night wrapped up in a blanket on the couch!
- Sunflower Lecithin – If you are prone to clogged ducts while breastfeeding, Sunflower Lecithin will be your friend! It thins out your milk so it is less likely to become clogged. It can also help in resolving an existing clogged duct.
- The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding – This empowering book, written by the internationally respected La Leche League, is a great resource for breastfeeding mamas of all kinds: working mothers, stay-at-home moms, single moms, and mothers of multiples. It answers the most common breastfeeding challenges and offers tons of support for every situation.
- 4-in-1 Nursing Cover, Scarf, and Carseat Canopy – Any practical mama loves a multi-use product, and this nursing cover is just that! It functions as a pretty scarf, transforms into a nursing cover and can be used as a car seat canopy AND works as a shopping cart cover. What, What? That’s pretty cool! I’ll definitely be gifting this to all of my expectant mom friends!
- My Free Printable Nursing Tracker – Keep track of which side you nursed on last, what time it was and how long baby nursed as well as any notes you want to add. (Get yours below!)
Whew! That was a lot! I hope you’ve found these tips from my tribe of milk making mommies helpful and encouraging. I know it’s not easy, but every one of these moms will tell you that it is SO worth it, for reasons too many to count. You can do this!
