As a new mom, there is one thing above all others that makes a new mama nervous. Is your baby’s crib a safe environment? With all of the talk going on about SIDS, I was terrified to put my sweet little babe into that big ol’ crib all by herself. Was the mattress firm enough? Sheets soft enough? Was that little gap between the mattress and crib railings too big? Can I use that beautiful crib bumper that came with the crib bedding set? If you can’t tell by the questions I had, I was really worried about safe baby sleep. I am sure it is one of every new mom’s biggest fears. You just spent 10 months growing that sweet baby, now you have to keep her as safe as possible. Here are a few of my favorite things that eased my mind when it came to safe baby sleep.
Keep Baby Close
The first five months of both of my daughter’s lives were spent in this travel size crib (which was the perfect size to keep in our bedroom!) just inches from our bed. I loved this little crib for a few reasons: number one, it was a great size to keep in our bedroom. Number two, it fit through doorways so I could bring my sweet baby around the house with me if needed. Lastly, it was simple to fold up and take on the go. I loved this smaller version of the traditional pack and play and it was more functional than a bassinet or co-sleeper.
A Safe Baby Sleep Crib Bumper Solution
That question we all have about crib bumpers? Well, the answer is, “no” you should but use a crib bumper in your baby’s crib. But that doesn’t mean you can’t protect your baby’s head and limbs. These vertical crib liners are not only adorable, but they are doctor approved! This means that they are 100% safe to use in your baby’s crib! Here are a few more of the benefits:
- Protect Baby’s Head & Body
- Keep Limbs Safely Inside
- Provide Optimum Air-flow
- Ensure No Risk of Suffocation or Strangulation associated with horizontal crib bumpers.
- No dangerous ties – just zip on!
- Made to fit ANY crib, and 24″ high and 6″ wide.
- Compress to accommodate shorter crib rails. Stretch to fit up to rails 3″ in circumference.
- Zip together to cover wider rails or corners.
And, they are reversible which means you get two color choices! Vertical crib liners are a perfect way to keep your baby safe while providing the comfort that you want.
Cotton Teething Guards
It’s inevitable! Teething babies chew on just about everything, including their crib railings. My 20-month-old actually has a chip on her front tooth from falling in her crib when she was teething:( She must have been standing and bumped her gum, (her tooth wasn’t even through the gum before this!) exposing and chipping her front tooth. Keep your baby’s teeth safe and keep that expensive crib safe at the same time with these adorable teething guards. Maybe something like this would have kept my daughter from chipping her tooth!
A Baby Monitor Designed for Safe Baby Sleep
If this doesn’t give you a piece of mind as a new mom, I am not sure what will! This Owlet Baby Monitor will track your baby’s most important vitals, keeping you in the know about what is going on with your little one. Each monitor comes with an Owlet sock, the base station and access to the Owlet app where you can see everything you need to know about your baby.
An Extraordinary Swaddle
Swaddling a baby is a no-brainer. Imagine spending the last 10 months of your life in a nice and warm, dark place where you felt safe and secure and then being pushed out into a cold, bright world. Thank heavens mommy was right there! Swaddling a baby recreates the feeling baby had while in a womb and can help them sleep longer, safer and they are even less prone to colic and fussiness. So, why wouldn’t you swaddle? The Wombie is the safest, most natural way to swaddle a baby and I can’t recommend them enough. They have swaddles for different stages of baby’s life and all swaddles promote “womb-like” atmosphere without restricting hip or arm movement. Would you believe they even have Woombies with the famous Soothie pacifiers attached to them?
I hope these products help you feel at ease about putting your baby down to sleep! There is nothing worse than feeling anxious about the lack of control you feel you have over your baby’s safety. The good thing is, is that there are lots of products out there designed for safe baby sleep. Now it’s your turn to get some much-deserved shut-eye!
